Design Check List

There are certain steps you will need to take to create a web presence.
Here is a short plan to assist you:

DOMAIN NAME & HOSTING
Choose a domain name and register it, we can help you do this. With some of our packages your domain name is free. Try to choose a name that is easy to remember and describes what you do.
(For example, if you do marketing for lawyers under the company name LawSpeaker you might choose the domain LawSpeaker.com or Law-Marketing.com. Recent research shows hyphenated names such as Law-Marketing.com do better on search engines than non hyphenated names like LawMarketing.com as the words show individually for searches.) You can get your domain name free here, with some of our packages. Also, you can host your pages with us. If you prefer not to, then we can help set up hosting with another company.

  • Go on the web and search for your competitors' sites. Make a list of what they have on their sites that you want on yours. This will start you thinking about what needs to be on your site and give you an idea of what size site (how many pages) you will need. You can print out the attached form to help you keep notes.

  • Make a list of the different pages you want on your site and what should be on them. Keep it simple at this point, don't try to write the whole thing yet.
    • Home Page/Welcome Page-The first page of your site. Custom designed just for you. You describe your farm or business.
    • Products/Services Pages - Training, Horse Boarding, Western Store, etc., Service 1, 2, 3 or Product 1, 2, 3
    • About Company Page - history of company, Bios of owners
    • Horses/puppies for Sale - (very big reason to have a site) List your horses for sale, photo, price, pedigree, etc. This can also be updated and maintained by yourself if you want, if you host with us.
    • Stallions Page(if you have horses) - List your stallions, pedigree, breeding information, offspring, photos, etc.
    • Calendar of Events - List your shows, clinics, etc.
    • Shopping Cart - For those of you who have products for sale, such as handmade items, horse items, tack, unique gifts, etc. We can set up PayPal for you to receive credit card payments.
    • Contact Page - address, phone, e-mail and a form for prospects to ask questions. A form that your clients and customers fill in and you will receive in your email. You design what questions you want to include..

  • Make a list of sites you like and sites you don't. These do not have to be in similar fields as yours, but it will give me a better feel for what your site should look like. (You can use the form from step 2 for this, too.)Also, please check the FAQ's page for more information.

    SIGNED AGREEMENT
Once you have contacted us for site design and hosting is confirmed, (we can help you with the hosting set up) a contract will be mailed, e-mailed or fax'd for your approval and signature. This must be returned with the materials (below) in order to begin creating your web site. Deposit/payment may be by check, money order, or credit card in US funds as detailed in your agreement. Or you may choose to PayPal the money to us. Please note that you do not have to set up an account to use Paypal.

    MARKETING MATERIALS, PHOTOGRAPHS & LOGOS
Get all your current marketing materials together to show us. This would include your stationery, business cards, brochures, flyers, mailers, and copies of any ads you use. It is important to utilize your "corporate identity" when creating the website so that the prospect or customer is constantly reminded of who you are. When they see the website, they remember the ad or brochure. When they get a flyer they remember the website, etc.

Start collecting pictures of your product or of performing your services. The web is a visual media and pictures are often more persuasive than words. If you are currently using a brand or logo, please send a clear copy (letterhead is fine - black on white, if possible) in as large a size as available for clearest scanning. Brands can be sketched if a photo or letterhead isn't available. If you do not have one, then I will create one for you. Please send regular photographs meaning: no photographer's proofs(unless you have their approval), slides, or laser copies, please. Please indicate if you have any strong preferences where an image should be cropped, etc. If a photo is to be digitally air brushed or other photo effects applied, please explain what you wish to have done. Digital air brushing is always available, but is an additional charge if requested by after the original job is done.

    SCANNED IMAGES
If your photos are already scanned, they must be at least 300 dpi high quality scans no smaller than 600 pixels wide in RGB true color format saved to either BITMAPs, TIFFs, PNGS or Photoshop PSDs. ( ".bmp", ".tif", ".png" or ".psd") extension after the file name (ex: "dress1.bmp"). No JPEGs please (unless this is all you have)- as the compression techniques used to format JPEGs degrade their quality too much to work with as 'originals'. Scanned images may be mailed on PC-formatted 3.5" disks, or PC compatible CD. (We cannot use Macintosh formatted materials.) Because of file size, we cannot receive high resolution images by email. Please, try not to email your images. You may email them, but I can't guarantee the quality of them.

    TEXT
Start writing the content (text) for your site. While some web designers can write the copy for you, they do not understand your business and clients the way you do. It is far better to give the designer text to adapt for the web than for them to guess what your industry is like.

Your text or 'copy' can be easily emailed or saved to disk in plain text format, with double line breaks between paragraphs. Your text may also be sent hand written or typed, but additional charges may apply for formatting. If you have several areas of text, please indicate which area each piece of text belongs with. Or, you might title each piece: Home or Index, Products/Services, Stallion 1, Ranch History, on the back of photos, etc. just so it is clear where you want them to go. Additional charges may apply to what we refer to as extra text as in: pages of text or additional sections to the web site not discussed when the original job was done.

    PRODUCE RECORDS &PEDIGREES & DOCUMENTS
Please send the clearest copy(s) you have available to help eliminate possible spelling errors.

    COLOR PREFERENCES
If you have a definite color preference or scheme, please send samples (fabric, paint chips, copies of ads, or anything with the color than you prefer on) for closest color matching.

    BEST WAYS TO SEND
    Priority Mail (delivery confirmation optional)
    Fed-Ex
    UPS
We never recommend regular mail as it very hard to be tracked. If you do send regular mail, we will not be responsible for lost mail. Some photos, are irreplaceable. We've had excellent luck over the years with Fed-Ex and Priority mail.
